BEACH!!

Minus seeing a small child almost drown, which has me TOTALLY freaked out for several reasons, we have really enjoyed the beach at a park on Lake Washington. Kyah is a total daredevil when it comes to the water, and Gage gets into his shins and then bends over to put his face, with his goggles on, into the water. It's pretty funny.

Before I Forget....

Gage had his five year dr. apt. earlier this month. He weighed 38 pounds was 41 1/2 inches tall. He was in the 25 percentile for both his height and weight.

He had his vision and hearing tested and passed both. When doing the vision check, they had him looking at a chart of shapes and covering one eye. When they came to what I would have called a moon, he said, "crescent." I couldn't help but laugh. What five year old calls it a crescent??? Such a Gage thing to do. And when they tested his hearing, he was suppose to say yes when he heard a sound, instead he giggled the whole time, we think that meant he could hear. :)

He gave great answers to the Dr. When asked what he likes to eat, he said, "eggs, pancakes, bacon, oranges, and apples." The dr. continued to ask him about other foods and he answered yes to all of them. Then he asked Gage what he liked to do for fun. Gage said, "baseball, basketball, puzzles, and family home evening." And the Dr. asked Gage if we do that on Mondays. He must have lots of LDS patients.

Gage had to go to the bathroom in a cup. I thought it would be best to have him sit on the toilet and fill the cup up like that. Well Gage got on the toilet aimed at me standing up with the cup and let it fire. And he really had to go too. I was screaming for him to stop as I was getting soaked along with the walls. Luckily I had quick reflexes and put the cup up as a shield really fast. Lesson learned.

Gage had to get five shots! One in each leg, two in one arm, and one in the other. He did AMAZINGLY well and just kind of whined that it hurt. He never cried! We went to Target and got a treat! One of those shots was a tetanus and during the middle of the night that night, he woke up crying because he had to go to the bathroom and couldn't move his let. It was so sad. Same thing happened in the morning. I told him to get up and walk to it would feel better. It was the saddest little limp I have ever seen. I scooped him right up and put him on the couch and got him some Ibuprofen. It helped a lot. We went to the park to play and it never bothered him again.

He is one healthy guy. And I'm one happy Momma.

I almost forgot to mention....

Gage will only take showers now. It makes him seem so grown up to me. And sometimes he requests his goggles, which makes me laugh every time!

New Book Club Book: Sam's Letters to Jennifer by James Patterson

My friend Michelle suggesting picking a new book and having an online book club. I love it! Let's do it!

This will be our book for the month of July. During the first week of Aug. I will do a post where we can leave our comments on this book and have an online book club. I hope lots of you will join! And if not, Michelle and I will have great conversation with just the two of us. :)

Book Club: The Education of Little Tree

I have been reading a lot of books lately. I thought that the idea of a book club might be fun. There are ladies in our ward that have a book club every month. So I went to the library, checked out The Education of Little Tree, and read it in preparation for my first ever book club meeting. I was so excited. (This was last week) Then Nate came home that night after work and informed me that he was going hometeaching (visiting families in the church) and that he would be gone during the exact hours of the book club. I was soooooooooooooo disappointed! Bordering on devastated. So, I'm thinking that maybe we could have a mini book club about this book here on my blog. If you have read this book, please leave me a comment about it and we'll see what kind of a discussion we can have. Since I have never been to a book club, I don't really know what goes on, but lets give it a try. :)

Here's my comment about the book.

I'm wondering if the misspelling in the book are the way he wrote it in his first draft because that's how he thought it was spelled. And then he told his editor not to correct them because that's how he spells. Or did he eventually learn how to spell correctly, but wanted to misspell words because that's how he spelled them as a child???? I don't know.

I did like this book a lot. I wish there was another book about his years as a teenager. Heck, maybe there is and I just don't know it. :)

A Fun Running Tag - from Marathon Mommies

1. How would you describe your running 10 years ago?

Running? Oh, that's something you do while you're playing soccer.

2. What is your best and worst run/race experience?
I think my best and worst run experience is the marathon. It was by far one of my biggest accomplishments physically and mentally! And that is also the very reason it qualifies as the worst too. It was WAY harder than I had ever imagined it would be. That darn right IT Band! Actually, my 18 mile training run is the worst run I ever had. It was my first long run alone as my training partner Debbie had hurt her back during our 17 mile run. I had it in my mind that it would be horrible running alone, and it was. I just couldn't get going. Every step was a challenge. Ugggg.

3. Why do you run?

For the sense of accomplishment I feel, for the alone time to think, and to try to maintain my weight of course. :)

4. What is the best or worst piece of advice you've been given about running?

Best: Invest in a good pair of shoes.
Worst: I don't think I've been given any bad advice yet.

5. Tell us something surprising about yourself that not many people would know.

I'm afraid to run on trails by myself. I won't do it. When I run around town, I stick to the busiest roads so that if someone tries to attack me, hopefully there will be plenty of good Samaritans to come to my rescue.

Joe Dirt Showed Up at My House Today!

My brother in law showed up today looking like Joe Dirt's Twin!!

Pretty hilarious! But not to Mom. So I did her a favor and gave Joe Dirt a haircut!

Post Haircut Pictures.

I think I did pretty good!!

P.S. Ladies, he is single! I have his number if you want it. :)

My Marathon Dedication

For the marathon, I decided to dedicate every mile to a person or people that have helped get me to the marathon, or just someone I love. I got this idea from the book Running With Angels.

P.S. I started putting up pics of everyone in random order and then realized it was going to take forever and I lost interest. So don't be upset if you are a dedicated mile, but you don't have a picture.

Here was my list.

1. Jana. I don't think I would have committed to the marathon if Jana hadn't decided to do it with me. She got mile one because I knew we would have started together and I probably only could have kept up with her for one mile. :)

2. Debbie. Debbie was my friend that trained with me on my longs runs until she got hurt. I probably wouldn't have made it without her to keep me company those first 8weeks.

3. Lindsay-S.I.L. She ran the half that day and I was so glad to get to share the start with her.

4. Kimm-sister. Kimm ran her first ever 5K that day and it started 30 minutes after we started the marathon. I figured right when I got to this mile she would be starting her race. I'm so proud of her. Also, a few Christmases ago we played a game with the extended family where you had to write down one thing that you have always wanted to do on a piece of paper. Then when they were read, you had to guess who had written it. There were two people who had written "run a marathon." Me and Kimm. I know this 5K was the start of her marathon journey.

5. Kylee-sister. She also ran the half that day. I knew somewhere between mile 4 and 5 the halfers and the marathoners split on the course. I was hoping we might be together still at that point. ( I actually did see her coming back but her music was too loud and she didn't hear me yell.)

6. My Dad. He has always been one of my biggest running cheerleaders. He always believes I can win. :)

7. Braddy-brother. Bradley ran my very first half marathon with me. I would have been totally alone that day if he hadn't decided to do it with me at the last minute! He is also child number 7 in our fam.

8. Jordy-brother. Jordan is child number 8. He ran my second half marathon with me, bless his heart. Gotta love him.

9. Hunter-brother. Child number 9. Seemed appropriate.

10. Tara, Kristin, and Anne- These girls were key in my race!! They were the best cheerleaders ever! I don't know how I would have done it without them. Plus, Tara ran the SLC marathon the very first year the race happened! I figured I might see the girls around mile 10.

11. Rocky/TJ- My bros, what else can I say, I love them.

12. Carla/Debbie- Both of these girls ran with me at different times after Debbie got hurt.

13. Jeff- Jeff ran the half marathon at SLC. We got to spend the first 30 seconds together. :) Jeff has always been a big fan of my running and we have fun talks about our races.

14. Grandpa King- I know that my Grandpa would have been very proud of me if he were still alive.

15. Rainier to Ruston Girls- The first organized race I had

16. Liz- I ran my first organized race with Liz at age 14. (Sound to Narrows)

17. Erin- She ran her very first ever half marathon at SLC!!! I figured around my mile 17, she would be finishing. Turns out she was way more speedy than she thought she would be.

18. Kelly- She is one of the girls that started the Marathon Mommies website, but more importantly, she was my very own marathon mentor!! It was so nice to have her to talk to and get all sorts of advice and words of encouragement!

19. Marathon Mommies/ Will Run For Designer Jeans Girls- This network of AMAZING women were so helpful and fun to share the journey of training for a marathon with via the internet.

20. Homie- He was my high school track coach. During this mile I kept thinking how proud he would be of me if he knew what I was doing right then!

21. Grandpa Joe- I was thinking that my Grandpa Joe would have been my biggest cheerleader if he were still alive. I kept thinking, during the race, that he was probably smiling down on me from Heaven.

22. Mom- My mom has always been a big supporter of my running. I really appreciated the fact that she flew out to Utah to be there for my first marathon. And even better than that, at the last minute she registered and ran the 5K that day! It was a major family affair!

23. Kyah- I had to dedicate miles to my kiddos. They sacrificed some Mom time on Saturdays while I did long runs. I knew that they would have been big cheerleaders along the course if there could have been there.

24. Gage- Both of the kids were so proud that Mommy was running a BIG race. :)

25. Nate- There was no way any of this marathon craze would have happened without my sweet husband Nate. He never complained about giving up his Saturday mornings for 16 weeks so that I could train. He supported me completely along the way. That really meant a lot to me.

26. Me/Heavenly Father- I thought it appropriate to dedicate a mile to me and how amazing I was to have accomplished this feat! Although just like in my last half marathon, I was thinking about God too and how grateful I was to have a body that could run a marathon, even if it hurt! And I spent some time praying for a little extra strength to make it!

There is Hope!

I take the worlds fastest showers because I never know what Gage and Kyah may do when I'm in there. Usually I get out of the shower to crying. Today was like music to my ears when I got out of the shower to hear Gage reading to Kyah. It was very sweet, I had to get a video.

Funnybuns Friday: Two Days Ago

This video is of Kylee getting pumped up to run her first leg of Rainier to Ruston. Too funny!!

Happy Father's Day to Nate!

When I married Nate, I had NO idea what a great Dad Nate was going to be when we had children! He is one of the best Dad's I have ever known and has exceeded my expectations. . He provides, plays, teaches, goes to the park with them, is worried about them when they are sick, and is involved in all they do. And the kids love him for it. Thanks Nate for being such a wonderful example to our children and for being the best Daddy ever.

On a funny note, Nate is a worrier when it comes to the kids. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree on this one. :) Here are some of his questions he asked the nurse when Gage was born.

1.He has sneezed seven times in the last 30 minutes, is that normal?

2. What kind of special sponge do I need to go buy to give Gage a sponge bath?

Also, when we first found out I was pregnant with Gage, he would bring me huge glasses of milk all day long because he wanted Gage to have strong bones. :)

I know there are more, but I can't think of them right now.

Rainier to Ruston III: 2008

We ran the Rainier to Ruston relay race this past weekend. When I say we I mean my brother's TJ, Brad, Hunter, my sisters Kylee and Lindsay, my friend Toni and me. We had such a great time. Kylee and I made shirts for everyone with their nicknames on them and funny sayings. Our team name was Team Hanni and a Substitute. Here we are at the start.

The race was full of adventure. During Kylee's first leg, she had to run 5.7 miles through mud and water! She also fell three times. I got a video of her just about to exit the trail onto the road and my Dad is running with/behind her with his arms in the air. It was pretty cute.

Also during that run, we were waiting on a bridge to watch her run below us and then I looked over to see my brothers carrying HUGE rocks to throw over the edge of the bridge into the river. Such a boy thing to do.

We also had a team member that had to "do business" in the woods and was grateful for maple leaves. This person shall remain nameless, but I assure you it was NOT me. hehe. Bradley had an AMAZING run on his first leg and made up 20 minutes to catch us back up with our friends' team who started the race early with us. We cheered like crazy when we saw him because we weren't expecting him yet and couldn't believe it. But then this is what you look like after you run 5.4 miles in 41 minutes.

Bradley also had an exciting second leg. He sprinted like a maniac to the exchange bell against another young guy. It was intense. The other guy had no chance of getting by Brad's wild monkey arms.

My friend Toni was a serious running machine! She was our second fastest runner and amazed us all.

Brad told me I had to sprint against someone at the finish if that is what it came down to and sure enough it did! With about 150 yard to go, I decided I HAD to sprint to pass the girl in front of me. I knew I would never live it down if I didn't give it a good go. So I sprinted my heart out and with crazy cheering crowds, I passed her with about 10 yards to go. She had no idea I was coming! It was so fun.
We had a really great race. It took us 8 hours and 15 minutes. We beat our last years time by 52 minutes!

Click on this picture to enlarge it. I love the look of determination on my face.

Me finishing the race.

That's what sprinting will do to your backside.

Post race group shot.

We were really proud of Hunter. He finished his leg super fast and Kylee was so happy she wanted to give him a hug, but she got denied. This video makes me laugh every time!

Extra Pics
Lindser coming down the hill to the exchange bell.

Lindsay finishing leg 1 and Kylee taking off.

Kylee super tired after her leg.

TJ running cast and all.

Toni running in Fife.

Tonilicious, Grrrr.....Vicious!

Funnybuns Friday

My brother's TJ and Rocky, and my SIL Lindsay came over yesterday to visit. We took the kids to the elementary school to play. I had this good idea to have time trials on this funny circular toy. Basically we started on two foot holes and had to climb around the whole thing and get your feet back to the starting two foot holes. I went first with a very slow time of 48 seconds. TJ went second and got 29 seconds. Rocky went third and fell hard. It was so funny. So we decided to get the video camera. Rocky went again, but didn't fall-that was recorded. Then I went and wasn't quite so lucky. The problem was, I almost fell, and then I looked to see if my feet were close to the starting point and basically I just tried to get them there too fast. You'll see what I mean when you watch it. I did it in 18 seconds.

Rocky's attempt

My Attempt.

Somebody is Growing Up....

and someone else (me) doesn't appreciate it. :) She's so pretty though.

This is How My Day is Going.....

Yes, my grocery bag busted open leaving me a mess of a broken jar of pickles and various canned goods rolled everywhere. Nice.

"Calgone, take me away." (Tell me someone remembers that commercial from their childhood.) :)
