Is all it took to lose my first toenail after the Utah Valley Marathon. I say first because there is one more on the way. My feet look HOT in sandals!

I am a Marathoner: Utah Valley Marathon Race Report
Pre Race
This race went well for me. It started out super early. I got up at 3:30am to leave at 4:10am to catch the bus at 4:30am, arriving at the start line at 5:00am. I had a whole hour to wait until the start. It went by quickly. There were bon fires all along the side of the road that us racers stood around to keep warm and to do some nervous chatting. At 5:30 it was off the the porta-potties and to the start line. I made it to the start line with about 1 minute to spare. Luckily I found my friends that I had come to the race with, my neighbor/running buddy Kristi, and her Friend Cami. Out of no where the gun went off and before I knew it, we had started the marathon.

I like to write on my feet in sharpie marker. "Go feet!" and "Let's PR today!" I also like to have my toes match my tank top. :)

Just before leaving the house.
The Race
I only stayed with the girls for about 10 steps before I had to wave good bye and leave them behind. I had to run my race pace. I knew I could not let myself take off too fast running down the canyon. I did a good job of pacing myself the whole race. I was right around a 10 minute mile. Running down the canyon was awesome! It was beautiful and the weather was perfect! Right after we started I realized I forgot to take my ibuprofen. So at the first aid station, I took my first dose. My left IT band started acting up at mile six and I got really really nervous. So I said a quick prayer for my left leg and kept on running. I took my first gel pack at mile 7 and continued on down the canyon. We got out of the canyon at about mile 9.5 and only one mile later I spotted my sister Kimm cheering like a maniac equipped with posters and her friend Heidi to take pictures. I think it must have really pumped me up because my fastest mile split was mile 11. :)
I'm behind this guy with my arms in the air.

As you can tell, I was feeling great! I loved this part of the course too because it is practically in my backyard. I was really familiar with the area and had run on these road lots of times.
At the half way mark, I was at 2 hours 11 minutes and about 15 seconds. Exactly at the pace I wanted to be at. I was still feeling good. Right after this I saw Kimm again. It was just after mile 14.

And then about 100 yards after Kimm was Nate's sister Tara. She was a volunteer at this race and was showing us where to turn. I stopped for a quick pic with her.

Then about 1/2 mile after that I saw Nate, Anne, and the kids. I was so happy to see them. They weren't ready for me to come thought, so I don't have any pictures from that spot, but I did get kisses from the kids and Nate and off I went.
I was still feeling great and then I saw Kimm again at mile 16.5. There was no doubt in any runner's mind near me that Kimm was there for me. She's a great cheerleader!

I guess Kylee and Mark just barely missed me at this spot. They pulled up just in time to see me running away. At this point I was on the Provo River trail headed out to Utah Lake. From about mile 18-20 there were mass amounts of mosquitoes!! I was a good Samaritan and wiped about 15 off some guy's back! He was walking and was seriously getting eaten alive! I ran for a little while with my hand over my mouth so I wouldn't eat one. I would have thrown up, guaranteed! I took another gel pack at mile 19. When I finally got out off the river trail just after mile 20 I was so glad! I definitely was starting to be in pain due to my IT band on my right side. Every time I walked through an aid station to get water, I had to limp it hurt so bad. I just pushed through it though. I saw Kylee right after I got off the trail. She was following me slow in her car and tossed me some body glide through the window and then I tossed it back. Pretty funny. Up to this point, I had been running with my ear buds only in one ear. I like to hear my music, but I also like to be aware of what's going on around me and occasionally talk to a fellow runner. But at this point, I needed to blast my music in both my ears to get me to the finish. I was TIRED! I saw the whole crew of my supporters at about mile 21.25. (Kylee, Mark, Kimm, Nate, Gage and Kyah) They were on the other side of the road. I did my best to wave at them and give them a smile.

If you click on the picture to make it bigger, you'll see the girl right behind me in the black shorts. Well, my second good Samaritan act of the race came with her. She had toilet paper hanging out the back of her shorts and I politely tapper her on the shoulder and told her. Could you imagine how embarrassed she would have been at the finish when she realized everyone saw toilet paper coming out her shorts! I really am a good Samaritan! ha.

Just around the corner from here, I saw my good friend Ainsley, her daughter Evelyn, and her husband Terance. I gave them all high fives as they yelled for me. It was so fun to see them. (Thanks guys!)After seeing them, I knew I wouldn't see any more fans until I got to the finish. I just did my best to push myself the best I could to acheive my goal of 10 minute miles. I knew it was attainable and that felt great, even if my body didn't feel so great....... AT ALL. At this point in the race I was also feeling like this could really be my last marathon, so I really needed to meet my goal. :) Why do I run marathons again???? I wasn't sure at that point. :)
I finally made it to where I could see the finish and I started to feel emotional! I knew I was achieving my goal! I was going to crush my previous marathon time! And this was the first marathon my husband had ever been able to come to. I sped up and then I saw all my friends and family! I ran over to them and they set Gage and Kyah on the course and I held their precious little hands and we ran towards the finish.

Poor Kyah tripped and fell.

I picked her up and kept going but she was yelling, "I don't want to be carried, I WANT TO RUN!"

So I put her back on the ground and the three of us crossed the finish line with a time of 4 hours 23 minutes and 26 second!

An 18 minute 4 second improvement from my best marathon time! They gave Gage my medal and he put it on me. It was a precious moment for me. I had done it! My Garmin watch had my average mile pace at 10 minutes exactly!
Post Race

The group. I feel really blessed to have so many people come out to cheer me on!! Thanks everyone! It means a lot!

The babies.

My neighbor Kristi finished her first marathon in 4 hours 55 minutes. She did awesome!

The Day After.
My toes are killing me!!! Specifically my second toe on each foot. The toe is purple around the toenail and the toenail is basically floating on a blister. Lovely, I know. If anyone comes near my feet, I yell. And shoes will not be coming anywhere near my toes anytime in the near future. I don't expect to keep these toenails for very long. Oh, the beauty of a marathon!

This picture doesn't due my poor toes justice. I took off my polish on that second toe so I could see what the damage was.

Rainier to Ruston IV
This is the fourth year in a row I've participated in the rainier to ruston relay. The first two years was with Brad,Kylee, and three friends. Last year and this year we switched to an all family team. We had so much fun! Kylee was feeling super sick this year due to having her wisdom teeth out, so she couldn't run. Jeff picked up an extra leg and Kimm took on a leg. Kylee ended up driving out to meet us and walked Kimm's leg with her eventhough she wasn't feeling well. At the end of each leg, the runner gets to ring the bell and slap hands with the teammate running the next leg. there are 12 legs total. Here are some videos and pics.
Up at Mt. Rainier for the start.
The Start. Jeff.
Jeff is the one in the white shirt that waves to me and then poses funny to start.
The day wouldn't be complete without some throwing rocks over the edge of the bridge.
Leg Two. Linserelli. This video is of Jeff finishing and Lindsay starting.
Leg Three. Hunter.
He was soooooo fast!
Leg 4. Braddy
Leg 5. Me.
Leg 6. Kimm and Kylee

Leg 7. Jeff.
Leg 8. Lindserelli.
Leg 9. Jeff

Leg 10. Braddy.
Leg 11. Me. Can I just tell you this was a crazy leg! They changed it from last year and it was an adventure. The first 2 miles were in sand. Then I was trailblazing through a jungle, and then I wasn't sure where to go when the gravel road ended and infront of me was a railroad bridge. Turns out I had to crawl underneath it. So crazy. I had to call Jeff from my cell phone twice to make sure I was going the right way.

The railroad bridge behind me is one of the two I climbed under.

Leg 12. Hunter Finishing.
Everyone at the finish.
We had so much fun! Can't wait until next year! Read Kimm's blog to get the funny details of the day.
